Pizza Hut, Gravesend
Hospitality Architecture Project
Located within Imperial Retail Park, the Pizza Hut in Gravesend is a hospitality architecture project by Scurr Architects. Designed as a free-standing restaurant, the scheme combines branded restaurant architecture, operational efficiency and a more contemporary customer experience. As a second-generation model building, the project replaced Pizza Hut’s earlier dual-pitched, hat-shaped roof format with a more refined architectural approach, including a barrel roof and recessed plant well.
Hospitality Architecture for a Free-Standing Restaurant
Our brief was to create a restaurant environment that remained true to the Pizza Hut brand while broadening its appeal through better hospitality architecture and a more sophisticated interior approach. The design needed to serve the brand’s core audience of young families while also creating a setting that would feel more attractive to teenagers and young adults.
From an architectural and operational perspective, the restaurant was required to accommodate the key features expected within a Pizza Hut layout, including the prominent buffet bar, the circular salad bar, the ice cream factory and the open waitress counter. These elements were central to the way the restaurant functioned, so the design had to balance customer flow, visibility and usability with a more modern hospitality environment.

Modern Restaurant Interior Architecture and Design
The interior architecture was developed to give the restaurant a stronger sense of identity, quality and atmosphere. A suspended raft ceiling over the booth seating projects from a feature wall clad in ash veneer with contrasting horizontal detailing, helping to create enclosure, depth and a greater sense of comfort. The ash joinery continues around the circular booth and curved wall, forming a backdrop to the centrally positioned salad bar, illuminated by a circular bulkhead and oversized pendant feature. A varied palette of floor finishes, joinery materials and lighting was used to give the space texture, contrast and visual interest. Lighting was carefully considered so that every table and feature wall was effectively illuminated, helping bring the restaurant to life throughout the day. A pre-set dimming system allowed different lighting scenes to be created for daytime and evening use, supporting a more flexible and contemporary hospitality experience.
