Pizza Hut, High Wycombe

Located along the bank of the River Wye, the striking developer’s shell, with pin-joint bulbous timber columns and glulam frame makes an impressive impact as you approach the restaurant. The curved, triangular floor plan created a challenging and interesting internal space, which has been utilised by our designers to form a modern but comfortable restaurant interior, celebrating all the brand core design icons.

Adapting Design to a Unique Architectural Setting

The unique nature of the freestanding waterside building afforded a challenge in terms of fitting out and incorporating the specific requirements of the standard Pizza Hut kitchen layout.

The original concept included incorporating the very attractive exposed timber soffit and to introduce a single duct AC system which followed the sweeping curve of the building. A continuous lighting raft was suspended from this duct amalgamating all services within the one element and keeping the rest of the soffit free. Feature spotlighting was used to add drama to the ceiling space at night.

Creating Atmosphere Through Light, Colour and Texture

The customer seating area was designed to mirror the long sweeping curve of the waterfront elevation. Great thought has gone into the design and lighting to ensure that the space, which is dominated by this expanse of glazing, is comfortable both day and night. Due to the lack of wall space, ceiling features have been picked out in bold colours to add warmth and contrasting pale blue, fabric window blinds have been used to soften the glazing elevation and brighten the glazing on dull days. Spot lighting has been concentrated on these blinds to bring warmth to this elevation at night. Coloured neon and fluorescent lighting has been used in conjunction with wall washing dichroics on the walls and ceiling bulkheads to create warmth and ‘texture’ and pendant lighting has been used to highlight feature seating elements. The only section of wall space on the external walls within the restaurant is dominated by a piece of bespoke relief artwork to add texture and pattern, contrasting with the blocks of bold plain colour. Walls, carpet and fabric are generally warm colours to compensate for the grey days and the colour of the curtain walling. Joinery finishes are generally a mixture of timber finishes, a dark timber finish being used to contrast with the pale floor tile to main walkways, which helps to maintain a light feel to the space away for the glazing.
