X-Leisure, Boldon
Scurr Architects worked closely with X-Leisure, the owners of the Boldon Leisure Centre, to help maximise their leisure site’s potential. The initial proposals included two new restaurant shell buildings and extensive car parking enhancements.
Restaurant Shell Design
We developed the restaurant’s architectural style and form taking references from the existing cinema building to provide symmetrical designs to blend in with the main frontage. The two units were identical but handed units. This was a challenging project as the available development areas for the restaurants were constrained by the cinema main entrance, building fire escapes, and existing pedestrian and vehicular routes around the site.
The curved roofs were somewhat challenging with their double curve formation required to curve on both plan and elevation. Design work required close collaboration with the structural engineers, contractors, steel fabricators and cladding installers to achieve the final results.

Tenant Coordination
The shell build for the first of the restaurant units was constructed with the tenant operator, Nandos, in position, and the building details, layouts and services were co-ordinated and agreed with their design team. The car park was redeveloped over several phases, during which the remaining vehicular access routes, delivery routes and minimum parking levels had to remain operational. The completed works increased the overall site parking capacity by 20 spaces.
